As business growth challenges multiply and commercial competition intensifies, prospecting remains a mandatory step for any company seeking to grow its customer base and revenue.

Therefore, it’s not possible to approach a prospect without a clear method, objective, or roadmap. Creating a prospecting plan solves this issue. Such a plan implies well-defined goals, relevant channels, and organized actions to achieve maximum ROI and business opportunities.

This article will guide you step-by-step through the design of a prospecting plan, detailing strategies and techniques tailored to your company’s needs.

What is a Prospecting Plan?

A prospecting plan is a strategic document providing an overview of the steps needed to acquire new clients. It does not directly include a contact list or a few phone numbers.

Instead, it’s a guide detailing the approach and actions necessary to reach objectives. It specifies the target audience, the channels to use—phone, email, social media, fieldwork—allocated budget, and expected performance. It is a cornerstone of any sales strategy.

Why Is a Structured Prospecting Plan Essential?

A structured plan helps a company allocate human, time, and financial resources optimally. Poorly organized prospecting can lead to wasted time, budget loss, and discouraged sales teams due to a lack of results. On the other hand, a well-thought-out plan allows you to:

  • Clearly define the purpose of each action and campaign, in line with the overall strategy.
  • Precisely target the most promising prospects using relevant data and criteria.
  • Select the most suitable channels for your industry, offer, and audience.
  • Track and analyze results rigorously and adjust based on performance.
  • Provide your sales team with a clear and motivating framework to enhance their ability to convince and convert.

In short, a structured prospecting plan gives your company a better chance of boosting its conversion rate and ensuring sustainable growth.

Prospecting Plan: Strategies to Attract Prospects

Prospecting isn’t just about “contacting prospects,” but about figuring out how to attract potential clients’ attention and entice them to learn more. This can be achieved through multiple approaches. First is outbound prospecting, where you proactively seek out prospects—sales letters, phone prospecting campaigns, appointments, trade shows. This creates direct contact, but the quality depends on your sales pitch and your knowledge of the target.

In parallel, inbound prospecting is based on creating relevant content and marketing actions that bring prospects to you. An optimized website, blog articles, webinars, or social media posts all help fuel interest and generate qualified leads.

Ultimately, an effective strategy combines both approaches, depending on your market, offer, budget, and geographic area.

Key Steps to Create Your Prospecting Plan

Building an effective prospecting plan requires a rigorous, sequenced process. These steps structure your efforts, ensure coherence, and make tracking easier. Here are the main steps, with practical examples and tips.

Define Your Sales Objectives

Quantitative Objectives

Quantitative goals are expressed as figures: number of prospects contacted, qualified leads generated, target conversion rate, sales volume, added revenue. These indicators must be realistic and time-bound, e.g., “gain 50 new clients in 6 months” or “increase conversion rate by 15% in one quarter.”

Qualitative Objectives

Qualitative objectives cover subtler yet essential aspects: improving prospect interaction quality, refining target profiles, strengthening brand image, optimizing messaging. Examples: “develop sales pitches better suited to identified needs” or “enhance credibility in a new market segment.”

Identify Your Target Audience

Potential Client Profile

Start by defining your ideal client (buyer persona), gathering data like industry, company size, location, budget, needs, and buying motives. Based on your database, field feedback, or market research, this will help you qualify leads and focus on those most likely to convert.

Market Segmentation

Segment your market into homogenous subgroups using criteria like business size, industry, specific needs, or buying behavior. This allows you to tailor your sales pitch and maximize the impact of your communication. Personalized messages mean better conversion rates, richer interactions, and improved customer relationships.

Select the Right Prospecting Channels

Phone Prospecting

Cold calling is a widely used direct contact method that provides real-time information. Though effort-intensive, it’s personalized and allows you to adjust your pitch based on live feedback. A well-prepared script is essential.

Social Media and Digital Marketing

Today, social media is an unavoidable promotion channel. For example, social selling on LinkedIn allows direct access to decision-makers. Combined with targeted emailing and content on your website or blog, it creates a conversion-friendly ecosystem.

Craft Your Sales Pitch

Your pitch must be carefully prepared to convince and build trust. It’s not just about presenting your product or service but addressing the prospect’s specific needs and showing how your offer is the right solution. A good pitch is clear, structured, precise, and adaptable.

Plan Your Prospecting Actions

Prospecting Campaigns

Define your campaign calendar, considering buying cycles and seasonal trends in your industry. Each campaign should include clear objectives, a budget, a timeline, and KPIs.

Tracking and Management Tools

Using a CRM is highly recommended to centralize prospect info, track interactions, and measure results. A well-used CRM improves customer relationship management and boosts sales efficiency.

Monitor and Analyze Results

The final step is to measure and evaluate results. Set proper KPIs such as conversion rate, acquisition cost, qualified leads, or ROI. Adjust your strategy based on this tracking to ensure ongoing improvement and commercial success.

Essential Tools to Optimize Your Prospecting Plan

Many tools help reinforce and systematize your work while improving efficiency. Beyond CRMs, you can use solutions to manage campaigns, measure performance, or automate repetitive tasks: marketing automation platforms, email services, analytics tools, or LinkedIn-specific prospecting tools.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Starting a prospecting plan without defining your audience could derail your B2B strategy, wasting time and money. A key mistake is lacking a long-term sales and marketing system. Without it, you can’t measure your strategy’s impact or know which action works best.

Tips for Long-Term Prospecting Success

Prospecting success doesn’t come from isolated efforts. It’s a long-term concept based on market regulation, insight, and continuous improvement. You must regularly train and motivate salespeople, update your databases, test new channels, and measure performance. Investing in automation solutions is not only a way to seize new opportunities but also ensures sustainable performance.

Conclusion

Creating an effective prospecting plan lies in your ability to systematically organize efforts to attract, convince, and convert. The key steps are: define clear objectives, identify your target, choose the right channels, develop a compelling pitch, plan actions, and analyze performance. This boosts success and ensures growth.

Prospecting is demanding, but when done right, it offers great development opportunities. Take the time to build a solid plan, adapt it over time, and leverage expert advice and tools to reach your goals.

If you work in sales, chances are you’ve already tried social selling on LinkedIn. And you might be all too familiar with this scenario: you spend hours sending connection requests, writing messages and follow-ups, only to realize… the results simply aren’t there. Conversations stall before they even begin, engagement is inconsistent, and you start wondering whether all that effort is really worth it.

But LinkedIn isn’t the problem. It’s how you’re using it that needs to change.

LinkedIn is a powerful sales engine — but only if you have a solid LinkedIn sales strategy.

So, how do you build one? And more importantly, how do you put it into action?

Since our sales experts are also LinkedIn specialists, we decided to pick their brains. And thanks to their field experience and expertise, we’re going to break down:

  • How to create and execute a LinkedIn sales strategy that delivers real results

  • How to monitor and analyze its performance

  • And which mistakes to avoid so you don’t waste your efforts

So, if you’re ready to turn things around on LinkedIn and start selling effectively, let’s dive in!

How effective is LinkedIn for sales?

Why use LinkedIn for sales in the first place?

Because the platform brings together more than one billion professionals across over 200 regions. Among them, around 63 million are decision-makers and 10 million are C-level executives. That means your audience is definitely there. You just need to reach them.

Standard users are somewhat limited when it comes to prospecting and generating leads on LinkedIn. And while any Premium subscription can help you contact prospects, Sales Navigator remains your best ally.

linkedin sales strategy sales navigator dashboard

That’s because it was specifically designed for sales professionals and comes equipped with over 50 lead and account filters to simplify prospecting. Not to mention advanced features not available in other Premium versions — such as buying intent signals or persona-based targeting.

We could spend hours comparing LinkedIn Premium and Sales Navigator. But instead, let’s focus on the numbers that prove just how effective LinkedIn (and especially Sales Navigator) is for salespeople.

With it, users are able to:

  • Close 31% more deals

  • Reach 4 times more decision-makers

  • Save over 65 hours per year by reducing tool-switching

What’s more, a 2023 study by Forrester Consulting revealed that Sales Navigator delivers an impressive 312% ROI over 3 years — with a return on investment in less than 6 months.

So if you work in sales and you’re not integrating LinkedIn (particularly Sales Navigator) into your strategy, you’re probably missing out on major opportunities.

What is a LinkedIn sales strategy — and why do you need one?

A LinkedIn sales strategy is a structured plan for using LinkedIn to find prospects, generate leads, and close deals. It involves tapping into LinkedIn’s networking opportunities, sharing high-value content, and using sales tools to engage with potential clients, build trust, and convert them.

A well-structured strategy helps you to:

  • Target the right people based on your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and Buyer Persona

  • Build credibility through expert posts, relevant comments, and sincere conversations

  • Increase efficiency by focusing on high-potential prospects and avoiding low-quality leads

  • Get measurable results by converting leads into paying customers

On the flip side, without a clear, actionable strategy, your efforts may lead to nothing but frustration, wasted time… and wasted money.

What should you do before building a LinkedIn sales strategy?

By now, it’s clear that having a social selling strategy on LinkedIn is essential.

But according to our sales team at Leadin, here’s what you need to do before building that strategy.

Define your sales objectives and goals

Every successful LinkedIn sales strategy starts with clear objectives. Defining them early on will make it easier to assess your performance later.

Start by identifying what you’re trying to achieve:

  • Generate leads?

  • Increase product demos?

  • Drive direct sales?

These objectives serve as your strategic compass. But to stay focused and move forward, you’ll also need measurable goals.

Unlike objectives, goals are specific, measurable, and tied to performance indicators (KPIs).

For example:

  • Generate 250 qualified leads from LinkedIn in Q1

  • Increase product demos by 30%

  • Generate €20,000 in revenue from LinkedIn

To track these goals effectively, associate them with relevant KPIs, such as:

  • Increase connection requests by 50%

  • Reach a 30% reply rate

With well-defined KPIs, you can plan actions, allocate resources, and measure progress. And as you get closer to your goals, you can refine your approach to boost performance.

Define your ICP and Buyer Persona

Once your objectives are set, you need to define who you’re targeting. In other words, it’s time to outline your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and Buyer Persona.

Your ICP refers to the type of company that would benefit the most from your solution.

Your Buyer Persona represents the typical decision-maker(s) in those companies.

Let’s say you’re selling a CRM to small businesses. Your ICP might be SaaS companies with 10 to 50 employees. And your Buyer Persona? A VP of Sales who lacks pipeline visibility and wants to streamline the sales process.

With those two profiles clearly defined, you’ll be able to focus your efforts on the right targets — and boost your chances of closing deals.

Optimize your LinkedIn profile

What’s the first thing a prospect sees after receiving your connection request?

Your LinkedIn profile!

That means it needs to make a great first impression. Otherwise, all your outreach efforts could fall flat.

Before launching your strategy, take time to optimize your profile for maximum impact.

Start with your profile photo: choose a professional, high-resolution image where you look confident and approachable. Avoid selfies or overly casual shots.

Your LinkedIn cover banner also deserves attention. Use it to assert your expertise, showcase your company, or sum up in one sentence how you help clients.

Next, polish your LinkedIn headline: focus on a sentence that highlights your value proposition — not just your job title. For example:

“I help field sales teams generate predictable revenue without relying on random selling tactics.”

linkedin sales strategy profile optimized

Then, craft a strong LinkedIn summary: clearly explain who you help, how you help them, and what results you’ve achieved. Keep the tone professional yet human, and integrate relevant keywords to increase your visibility in Boolean search queries.

Example of an effective LinkedIn summary:

  • I help B2B companies — especially SaaS and service providers — generate more qualified leads and close deals faster using data-driven LinkedIn outreach strategies.
  • With 5+ years of experience in sales automation and outbound marketing, I’ve supported over 200 businesses in scaling their pipeline while reducing manual effort. My focus: combining personalization, performance tracking, and the right tools to turn LinkedIn into a predictable revenue channel.
  • If you’re looking to build a repeatable, scalable LinkedIn sales system — let’s connect.

Finally, don’t forget to personalize your profile URL (e.g., linkedin.com/in/yourname) to boost your credibility and make it easier to share your profile.

Prepare your sales enablement resources

Outbound prospecting is a cornerstone of LinkedIn sales strategy. But let’s be honest: the chances of closing a deal with your very first message are slim.

Your prospects will have questions — and even objections. And as our Head of Sales puts it:

“Hearing ‘I’m not interested’ or ‘I don’t have time’ doesn’t mean the lead is lost. It simply means you need to know how to handle the objection.”

Some objections can be handled in the moment, but it’s best to anticipate them. Ideally, you should prepare your resources in advance.

For instance, our team often relies on case studies prepared by the marketing department to reassure prospects about the ROI of our solution. These materials clearly demonstrate the value other companies have achieved using Leadin.

Here are a few content ideas you can create yourself or in collaboration with your marketing team to help handle objections more effectively:

  • Blog posts that dive into your prospects’ pain points and offer actionable solutions

  • Videos (product demos, tutorials, client testimonials)

  • Case studies explaining how you solved similar challenges

  • eBooks or white papers that showcase your expertise

A good habit is to anticipate common objections and prepare specific responses in advance:

  • “It’s too expensive” → Provide a value breakdown or an ROI report

  • “I’m not sure this would work in my industry” → Share industry-specific case studies

  • “I don’t have time to implement this” → Explain how your solution saves time in the long run

Having these resources ready allows you to respond quickly and confidently, which greatly reduces the risk of losing a potential sale.

How to create a LinkedIn sales strategy

Now that you know who you’re targeting, it’s time to decide how to reach them.

Here are 4 prospecting strategies to integrate into your LinkedIn approach (you’ll find even more in our dedicated blog on LinkedIn prospecting).

1. Use Sales Navigator filters to precisely target your ICP and Buyer Persona

Sales Navigator filters allow you to translate your ideal targets into concrete search criteria.

Our team, for example, uses both lead and account filters to identify the right companies and the right decision-makers.

We then build lead lists based on that data, which are used to launch campaigns in Leadin.

linkedin sales strategy sales navigator leads lists

Leadin allows you to launch campaigns directly from Sales Navigator lead lists or straight from search results — saving time (though with slightly less precision).

2. Find leads in LinkedIn Groups

Did you know Sales Navigator has a “Groups” filter? Unlike standard LinkedIn, this filter allows you to target members of specific groups.

Before launching a campaign based on LinkedIn Groups, here’s what you should do:

  • Identify the groups that are relevant to your target audience

  • Organize that information (in a CSV file, for example)

  • Join active groups to engage in conversations with members

It’s true that many LinkedIn groups are no longer very active. But if used properly, they can still be a valuable source of leads.

3. Use lead alerts to reach out at the right time

Sales Navigator allows you to activate alerts on your saved leads.

Our sales team uses them to get notified when:

  • A lead publishes or comments on content

  • They’re mentioned in the news

  • They change roles or companies

These signals help you know who to contact — and when — so you can reach out with a relevant and timely message.

4. Attract prospects through thought leadership content

Thought leadership isn’t a direct outreach strategy, but it’s a powerful way to gain visibility and start conversations.

The key? Content.

High-quality content grabs attention, drives engagement, and builds trust.

It should address the problems, challenges, and goals of your target audience. Before posting, ask yourself what your ICP or Buyer Persona would find valuable — then list out relevant topics.

Also consider using a mix of content formats:

  • Text posts

  • Images

  • Videos

  • Carousels

  • LinkedIn Pulse articles

  • Polls

In our experience, videos and carousels tend to drive the most engagement. But make sure to rotate formats to stay accessible to everyone.

linkedin sales strategy linkedin carrousel post leadin

LinkedIn’s algorithm rewards consistency. Aim to post 2 to 3 times per week at minimum. Set up an editorial calendar and stick to it.

Finally, don’t forget to engage with comments, ask questions, and comment on other people’s posts. That’s how you’ll build your credibility on LinkedIn.

How to craft your LinkedIn messages based on your prospecting strategy

Your message is just as important as your sales strategy or tactics.

Each prospecting approach requires a slightly different tone and structure to truly resonate. So here are a few practical tips to make message writing easier.

And to help even more, we’ve included validated message examples.

1. Sales Navigator filters

Focus on personalization and contextual relevance when contacting prospects identified through filters.

  • Reference a specific detail from their profile or company

  • Keep it concise and address a concrete challenge you can help with or deliver clear value

Example message:

“Hi {{FirstName}}, I came across your post about {{PainPoint}} and it immediately made me think of the challenges that come with it.
When I worked with {{SimilarCompanies/Professionals}}, we tackled this by {{Solution}}, which led to {{TangibleBenefit}}.
I’d love to share a few ideas if you’re open to it.”

2. LinkedIn Groups

When targeting leads through LinkedIn Groups, build a connection by referencing your shared interest in the group or a current discussion.

  • Mention the group directly to create a natural rapport

  • Position yourself as helpful, not overly salesy

Example message:

“Hi {{FirstName}}, I noticed we’re both part of the {{GroupName}} group and wanted to reach out.
I specialize in {{Expertise}}, and I thought it might be valuable to connect and exchange ideas!”

3. Sales Navigator alerts

When using Sales Navigator alerts, timing is everything. Build your message around the alert to show you’re paying attention.

  • Reference recent activity like a promotion, job change, or post

  • Use it as a relevant entry point to start the conversation

Example message:

“Hi {{Name}}, congrats on your new role at {{Company Name}}!
Moving into the {{Role}} position must be exciting. I’ve supported others through similar transitions, and I know how tough it can be to manage {{SpecificChallenge}} while adjusting to new responsibilities.
One approach that worked well for others in your field was {{Solution}}, which led to {{Result}}.
I’d be happy to share more if you’re open to a quick chat!”

4. Thought leadership content

When reaching out to someone who interacted with your content, use that common ground to start a meaningful conversation.

  • Highlight shared values or goals to build credibility

  • Use the message to draw them further into your expertise

Example message:

“Hi {{Name}}, I saw you liked my recent post on {{Topic}}. It’s always great to see others in {{Industry}} engaging on these issues!
I’d love to hear your thoughts — what’s the biggest challenge you’re facing right now when it comes to {{Issue}}?”

How to execute a LinkedIn sales strategy

Once your strategy is in place — it’s time for action!

Whether you’re using Sales Navigator filters, LinkedIn groups, lead alerts, or content — all roads eventually lead to one key step: outreach.

Here’s how to do it efficiently.

1. Choose the right tools

Attracting leads through inbound is ideal — but outbound remains essential.

You can do everything manually, of course. But tools can save you massive time and effort.

Sales Navigator is the go-to for prospecting. And when it comes to sending messages, there are several sales engagement platforms. Our recommendation: use Leadin.

Leadin is an all-in-one tool that allows you to:

  • Automatically generate leads at scale

  • Multiply touchpoints using multichannel outreach (LinkedIn + email)

  • Find and verify lead emails to reduce bounce rates

  • Boost your reply rates up to 76% with personalized images and GIFs

  • Warm up your email addresses via our partner InboxFlare to avoid spam folders

All of this is powered by our Smart Sequences — a unique technology that combines LinkedIn and email with “if/then” logic. Your sequence adapts to each prospect’s behavior to reach them at the right moment.

Additionally, make sure to use a CRM (if you’re not already): HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce, and so on.

And if you’re regularly sharing content, LinkedIn now allows you to schedule posts natively without needing third-party tools. Otherwise, platforms like Hootsuite or Buffer can help you plan and automate your publishing schedule.

The key is to choose the tools that best suit your organization.

2. Create an outreach campaign

Here are the steps to follow when creating a campaign with Leadin, based on a Sales Navigator search.

Step 1: Filter your leads in Sales Navigator

Use filters (industry, job title, company size, location, etc.) to narrow down your audience.

Once you’ve got your search results, copy the search URL.

Step 2: Create the campaign in Leadin

  • Go to the Campaigns tab, then click on “New campaign”

  • Name your campaign

  • Paste the search URL

  • Choose the connection degree (1st, 2nd, or 3rd)

  • Click Next

Step 3: Define your campaign settings

You’ll need to configure three types of settings:

  • LinkedIn settings

  • Email settings

  • Global settings

If you want to include email outreach, select the email accounts to use. Leadin lets you connect an unlimited number of mailboxes, rotating between them to send thousands of emails — without extra cost.

You’ll also be able to define a sending schedule and set global targeting options.

Then click on Create the sequence.

Step 4: Build your Smart Sequence

Drag and drop actions and conditions into the editor, then connect them to create a logical sequence.

Don’t forget to add delays between each step.

Leadin also offers a library of Smart Sequence templates that have been tested and validated by our sales team.

Step 5: Add hyper-personalization

All message-type steps (invitation, LinkedIn message, InMail, email) support the use of dynamic variables.

  • Click on “Add an image”

  • Create a new template

  • Add a photo, logo, or personalized text

  • Save it, and the image will be automatically inserted into your message

Using this method, our campaigns reach up to 76% reply rates.

How to track the performance of your LinkedIn sales strategy

Even a well-executed strategy is only valuable if you measure its results.

Here’s what our sales team tracks at Leadin:

  • Number of leads generated

  • Connection rate

  • LinkedIn response rate

  • Email response rate

  • Conversion rate (number of leads turned into opportunities)

  • Number of meetings booked

  • Number of deals closed

All of these KPIs are available directly within Leadin, allowing you to adjust your campaigns in real time.

Additionally, if you’re unsure about the impact of the messages you’ve prepared in your strategy, a good practice is to experiment with A/B testing.

For example, when creating a Smart Sequence in Leadin, you can define up to 5 different variations of your messaging and compare their performance over time.

linkedin sales strategy campaign a/b test leadin

Of course, if results don’t show up right away, that doesn’t mean all hope is lost.

Often, it takes a little time for the effects to appear. Our team recommends giving your LinkedIn sales strategy 2 to 4 weeks to start delivering visible results.

Only then does it make sense to evaluate its performance and optimize accordingly.

5 Common LinkedIn Sales Strategy Mistakes

Here are the pitfalls to avoid if you want your LinkedIn efforts to pay off:

1. Sending generic messages

This is the most common mistake. If your message feels like spam or lacks personalization, it won’t be read.

Use dynamic variables and show genuine interest in your prospect.

2. Having a poorly optimized LinkedIn profile

An incomplete, vague, or misaligned profile drastically reduces your chances of getting responses.

Optimize your photo, headline, summary, and experiences.

3. Failing to track results

Without KPIs and tracking, you’ll never know what works.

Monitor your stats to improve your campaigns over time.

4. Not publishing content

If you never post, your prospects will struggle to assess your expertise.

Share helpful, authentic content regularly, aligned with your target audience.

5. Giving up too soon

Social selling requires consistency. Even if results are slow to come, stick with it, adjust, and keep going.

Conclusion

An effective LinkedIn sales strategy rests on three key pillars:

  1. A clearly defined target

  2. An optimized sales-ready profile

  3. Personalized and measurable campaigns

With the right method, LinkedIn becomes a powerful sales channel.

And with Leadin, you can:

  • Automatically generate leads from LinkedIn and Sales Navigator

  • Build smart multichannel sequences (LinkedIn + email)

  • Boost replies with personalized visuals

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you use LinkedIn effectively for sales?

Focus on building strong relationships. Optimize your profile, post engaging content that addresses your audience’s pain points, and use Sales Navigator for precise targeting. Combine that with personalized outreach and regular engagement to nurture leads and drive conversions.

What’s the ideal balance between inbound (content) and outbound (cold outreach) in a LinkedIn sales strategy?

From our experience, a 40/60 balance works well. That means 40% of your effort should go toward inbound strategies (content creation) to build trust and visibility, and 60% toward outbound (direct outreach) to actively engage prospects. Adjust based on feedback and available resources.

How can I get the most out of LinkedIn with a small team or limited resources?

Use automation tools like Leadin to save valuable time on manual tasks. This frees you up to focus on high-value actions like building relationships. Prioritize connecting with your ICP and buyer personas, and repurpose your content (e.g., turn a blog post into a video or carousel) to reach more people with less effort.

Fast-track your growth with the right LinkedIn sales strategy

Creating and executing a strong LinkedIn sales strategy is the difference between chasing leads aimlessly… and actually closing deals.

So, take the time to plan carefully, and only launch your strategy when you’re ready. Most importantly: don’t skip steps. Success on LinkedIn comes from a methodical and professional approach.

Keep in mind: results won’t come overnight — and that’s perfectly normal. Be patient, stay consistent, and adjust along the way. In time, everything will align, and your efforts will pay off big.

In this article, we will explore the 5 most common mistakes in B2B prospecting and provide you with advice on how to avoid them to maximize your results.

Mistake 1: Lack of precise targeting

Define a clear and precise ideal customer profile (ICP)

The first step to effective prospecting is to clearly define your ideal customer profile. This involves determining the demographic, firmographic, and psychographic characteristics of your potential clients.

Segment your market to identify relevant prospects

Use research and filtering tools to refine your targeting

Personalize your messages and communications

One of the most common mistakes in B2B prospecting is sending generic messages that are not tailored to the specific needs and interests of each prospect.

Adapt your pitch to the specific needs and interests of each prospect

Use the prospect's name and contextual information

Mistake 3: Bad timing

Identify key moments in your prospects' sales cycle

Timing is crucial in B2B prospecting. It is important to identify key moments in your prospects’ sales cycle and send your messages at the right time.

Inadequate follow-up, loss of engagement: Failing to ensure adequate follow-up can lead to losing interested prospects, or worse, pushing them to the competition.

Mistake 4: Inappropriate communication channels

Diversify your touchpoints to reach your prospects on their preferred channels

Use a combination of channels such as phone, email, social media, and online chat

The follow-up email is a good way to reach more prospects in B2B prospecting.

We know that the response rate to prospecting emails decreases with each email. Indeed, a study by Yesware reports 30% for the first email, 21% for the second, 18% for the third, etc. However, the response rate for the 10th email remains 7%. So why not go that far?

Let’s be clear: it’s not about spamming your prospects, but follow-up emails present a real advantage for prospecting. Still, you need to know how to write them correctly so they are opened.

In this article, we explain how to write a good follow-up email in B2B prospecting, and 5 examples to use for your prospecting campaigns.

  • Visiter votre site web

  • Prendre contact

  • Etc.

6. Une conclusion soignée

Par exemple :

  • Dites-moi ce que vous en pensez ! [Votre nom]

Bien cordialement,

[Votre signature] »

To succeed in your B2B marketing strategy, email prospecting is essential . 48% of B2B sales reps think email is the most effective way to generate new leads!

But how to make a successful prospecting email ? We have chosen for you the 10 best practices to adopt. You will also find mistakes to avoid .

10 tips for a successful prospecting email

In marketing, we speak of outbound when it is the salesperson who goes to the prospect.

B2B emailing is part of outbound marketing .

We also talk about cold emailing : the prospect is cold and has never shown interest in your offer.

Clearly define the persona

The persona represents your ideal typical customer . To properly define it, you need to research its characteristics.

In B2B , you must go beyond the basic criteria: the age group or its function for example. You should also determine the business sector of the company , its probable problems, etc.

Clearly defining your persona allows you to personalize your contact email with the prospect , from the subject to the content. A personalized subject line increases the open rate of your email by 22% !

Provide maximum added value in your cold email

Your prospecting email must bring the maximum added value to the contact. It can be:

  • Free advice (“ Our free advice for choosing the right CRM ”)

  • A PDF document (“What to consider when choosing your suppliers”)

Here is an example of email to avoid, since without any added value:

” Hello[Nom du prospect] ,

We promote our CRM.

Our CRM is used by all kinds of businesses.

Don’t miss this promotion, you won’t regret it!

You can place your order here.

Yours,

[Votre nom] »

At the end of the email, what makes you different? How do you correctly address the prospect’s problem? This email does none of that: its results will be bad.

For example, the email could have been accompanied by free advice on choosing the right CRM and setting it up correctly .

Find a real common point with the contact

You must have a real reason for writing to your prospect. For example, he liked a LinkedIn post on the difficulties of integrating a CRM : you can contact him because you can help him with this problem.

What you have in common: you also liked this post.

Be short and concise to prospect

37% of professionals receive more than 50 emails per day . An email that is too long then discourages the contact from reading it.

You must opt for a clear, simple and short email. Avoid phrases that only add volume to your text.

Let’s take the example of an equipment manufacturer selling windshield wipers. She wants to get the market for a taxi company.

In the email, we find the sentence: “The windshield wipers are used to have better visibility in rainy weather.” It’s obvious , everyone knows it! So it has to be removed .

On the other hand, you can indicate striking figures:

“For professional use, wipers should be changed every 6 months. This operation costs on average 30 €.

Our wipers are 50% more efficient than the rest of the market, for the same price! On a fleet of 200 vehicles, this is a saving of €3,000 per year. »

In 4 sentences, we pose the problem of the prospect, we provide him with a simple and effective solution and with measurable results!

Succeed in its object and its intro

As we have seen, a personalized subject increases the chances of opening your B2B prospecting email.

You need to make it more human so that the contact feels that the email is addressed specifically to them. It should also be short to work best.

Let’s take an example: “ Christian, say goodbye to stress at work! ”

The introduction of your prospecting email must also be well done: this is what the contact reads before the content of the email (in the preview of his mailbox). We will develop this point below.

Choose the right timing to send your prospecting email

Even with well-written content, a neat subject line, and intro, your cold email is unlikely to be opened if it’s sent at the wrong time .

For B2B in particular, the best days to send your prospecting emails are Monday and Tuesday . The rest of the week, the open rate only decreases.

For schedules, 75% of open B2B emails are sent during business hours . The peaks are located:

  • Around 9 a.m.

  • Early afternoon (2 p.m.)

Go for quality, not quantity

It ‘s hard to get quality emails if you write a lot of them.

It is better to write 5 quality prospecting emails that reach their goal , rather than 20 bad emails that will not convert.

Provide social proof

Social proof brings even more credibility to your offer. It could be :

  • Positive feedback from your customers

  • The very large number of people who have used/using your offer

  • Your company’s rating on a major customer review site like Trustpilot

Let’s take some concrete examples:

At Leadin , we have an excellent average rating on Trustpilot, we can highlight it.

note Leadin Trustpilot

Our customers are very satisfied with our services. We highlight some of their reviews on our front page. We can also do this in our solicitation emails:

avis client Leadin

Another example: Hubspot highlights their number of customers. 135,000 companies work with their tool! This is great social proof.

preuve sociale nombre clients Hubspot

Make two versions of your cold email and perform an A/B test

In emailing, an A/B test consists of randomly sending at least two versions of the same email to part of your contact list. You will then see if it is version A or B which is the most open, and therefore the most effective .

For example, for the same email, make two versions of the subject :

  • Version A: “Christian, say goodbye to stress at work!”

  • Version B: “Christian, manage stress at work with our advice”

Relaunch at the right time

After your first contact with the prospect, he may not respond to you right away. But the prospect may have already shown his interest in another way :

  • He visited your website.

  • He took the time to fill out the contact form to subscribe to your newsletters.

Also, give him time to respond to you.

On the other hand, if the prospect does not show up after a week , you can make a first follow-up.

The raise can take this form:

“Hello [ Prospect Name ],

I hope you are well !

Did you miss my previous email?

If I made the wrong contact within your company, do not hesitate to share the contact details of the person concerned.

Thank you for your help, and looking forward to serving you,

[ Your name ] »

Don’t neglect the reminders! The first raise multiplies by 3 your opening rate .

Above all, you can send several: some prospects will only respond after a certain number of emails (beyond 5 or 6 emails, you will have much fewer responses).

The 3 mistakes to avoid for a successful prospecting email

To be successful with your prospecting email, there are also mistakes to avoid :

  • Use generic content

  • Try absolutely to sell from the first contact

  • Do not put a CTA (“Call-to-action”)

Use generic content in your email

Using generic content greatly reduces the chances of your contact reacting to your email.

People appreciate that you use their first or last name. The email is addressed to them personally . Otherwise, they’ll think it’s a bulk email.

The content must also be personalized.

For example, if you sell a design service as a freelancer, you can take the design elements from the prospect’s website and give some advice on how to improve them.

It certainly takes more time, but you will get a lot more responses.

To personalize your messages in an industrial way, you can also integrate an automatically personalized image :

template image personnalisée emailing

It’s fun, and it grabs the prospect’s attention !

To use this type of content, you need a dedicated tool (we have chosen the 3 best at the end of this article!).

Try absolutely to sell from the first contact

Trying to sell your solution from the first contact means forgetting that you can work on your B2B relationship step by step.

Selling should not be the objective of your first contact with the prospect. Otherwise, it would be an advertising email. And with any luck, you’ll be flagged as spam!

The objective of the 1st email is to obtain a response from the prospect to initiate discussions. To do this, write an email:

  • Custom

  • Bringing added value (as in our example of web design advice)

  • With a valid reason to contact your prospect

Do not put a CTA (Call-to-action)

If your offer interests the prospect , he must know very precisely the next step to follow.

This is where the call to action comes in. This is placed at the end of the email and can take this form:

“I can share other advice with you over the phone, you can book 30 minutes with me on my calendar HERE. »

2 examples and 2 prospecting email templates

To help you succeed with your cold emails , let’s take a look at 2 examples of prospecting emails: one bad and one good.

To bring you the best examples , we searched our mailboxes to find concrete and real examples. We have selected 2 of them, in the sector of services to e-merchants.

A bad prospecting email example

mauvais exemple cold email

This sample prospecting email is bad on several counts.

  • Already, it brings no added value .

  • The introduction is clumsy : we don’t exactly understand its value proposition. This would be clearer with the help of social proof (an example of a service performed with a client).

  • The layout is horrible : we don’t want to read this huge block of text!

  • The content is too generic . The greeting includes the prospect’s first name. But there is no personalization in the content of the email: the name of the target company is not mentioned, its specific problem is not correctly stated. This would be for example: “Like X% of the brands we surveyed,[nom de la marque] want to produce responsibly? But you can’t find the right suppliers and the necessary guarantees?”

The valid reason for contacting the prospect is not very clear: “your brand caught my attention”.

There is an awkward repetition in the email : “ produce the production ”.

Finally, the CTA can be improved : there is no link to their website, and telephone appointments are made in response to the email.

A good example of cold email

Now let’s give a better (but not perfect) example. It meets the criteria for a successful prospecting email, increasing your chances of getting a response from the prospect.

exemple bon cold email

✅ What is good:

  • Content is clear and concise (can be read in seconds)

  • The CTA is super clear

  • The value proposition is very well explained

❌ What can be improved:

  • She tries to sell from the first email

  • It doesn’t address the issue well.

  • Content is not fully optimized

To be very honest, even after searching for hours, we didn’t find many good examples of emails.

Is it good news for you ! It means that you can do much better than your competitors!

2 B2B prospecting email templates

Prospecting email templates can help you get started the easy way . Here are 2 suitable for:

  • A real estate agent

  • A freelancer

Cold email template for a real estate agent

To be more precise, let’s take the example of a real estate agent who approaches to find properties for sale.

Object :[Nom du prospect] , sell your[Type de bien] at the best price !

” Hello[Nom du prospect] ,

I am[Votre nom] , a real estate agent who has been in the business for[Nombre d’années d’expérience] .

I saw on [Prospect ad origin: Facebook group…] , that you are selling your[Type de bien] located at[Lieu] .

I can help you sell it faster and at the best price, thanks to [Vos principaux atouts]. In France, 70% of sellers use a real estate agent to sell their property. To explain my services in detail, I can contact you by phone according to your availability.

In the meantime, you will find an attachment (ebook, PDF document, etc.) to help you in your efforts.

Regards,

[Votre nom] »

Prospecting email template for a freelancer

Here, let’s take the example of a web developer who redesigns sites and who is looking for clients.

Object :[Nom du prospect] , always be well referenced!

” Hello[Nom du prospect] ,

My name is[Votre nom] , web developer specializing in website redesign.

Your company’s website must follow new trends in terms of performance and natural referencing. For this, it must be redone on average every 3 years.

You can entrust me with this task,[Nombre] companies that have already trusted me.

I invite you to visit my website [URL]. You will find details on my offers, my previous achievements, more [Valeur ajoutée].

I can also contact you by phone. Let me know your availability.

Hoping to hear from you soon,

[Votre nom] »

In these 2 templates, we go straight to the point by offering our services: don’t forget that you can separate your message into several emails . In this case, in the first email, only talk about the contact’s problem (example: outdated website) and provide it with added value (example: guide to good practices for maintaining a website).

Let’s get to the heart of the matter… there is a scourge on LinkedIn. It’s everywhere, highly contagious, and seemingly impossible to escape… Have you ever received a LinkedIn connection message like this one? LinkedIn invitation message You have probably received a few as well. They are all the same annoying, low-quality, copy-pasted messages with absolutely ZERO personalization. Yes, we are indeed talking about generic LinkedIn connection messages that resemble “spam“. People often think that because they have used your first name and the name of your industry, it’s enough to give you a reason to accept. We are here to tell you that this is not the case – far from it. But don’t worry. We are going to teach you the best practices for LinkedIn connection messages as well as message templates that work to prospect on LinkedIn effectively.
We have sent campaigns with the same messages as the ones I am going to show you below. With these messages, our acceptance rate sometimes rises up to 70%! LinkedIn connection request messages highlight your way of networking on LinkedIn, whether for doing business (“social selling”) or even in everyday life. Why is this important? A recent statistic indicated that 98% of sales representatives with more than 5,000 connections on LinkedIn generally exceed their sales targets. So, what do you think about the effort that these high-performing sales representatives put into their connection request messages? Essential and justified, isn’t it? Just like in real life, it is important to know people and build relationships before establishing business relationships (in “social selling” there is first of all “social”!). And on LinkedIn, it all starts with a well-thought-out connection request message. That’s why we have prepared for you:
  • How to send/cancel a LinkedIn connection request message
  • The top 5 do’s and don’ts when sending LinkedIn connection request messages (strategy)

How to send/cancel a LinkedIn connection request message?

The right strategy brings the right result First of all, let’s talk about the different degrees of connections on LinkedIn:
  1. 1st degree connections are LinkedIn users who are already part of your network. You can communicate through LinkedIn messages.
  2. 2nd degree connections are LinkedIn members connected with your 1st degree connections (you have common interests and acquaintances).
  3. 3rd degree connections are LinkedIn members connected to your 2nd degree connections (you have nothing in common).
The easiest and most common way to get in touch with new people is to send connection requests with personalized messages to your 2nd and 3rd degree connections. Note that LinkedIn also offers you another option to contact other members of the platform, namely InMails. There are two types of LinkedIn InMails: free and paid. You can send free InMails only to members whose LinkedIn profile is “Open.” You can also send a “paid” InMail to any user on the platform. The number of paid InMails available depends on your LinkedIn subscription. If you don’t know what this is, how to use them, how many are included in your plan, check out this article on the subject where you will find everything you need!

How to send a LinkedIn connection request message

Assuming you have already selected your prospects, there are two ways to send a connection request message. In the right corner of their LinkedIn profile, click on “Connect.” Send a LinkedIn connection request OR Open the LinkedIn user’s profile. Click on “Connect.” Connection request via profile

How to cancel a pending LinkedIn connection request message

If you have sent a LinkedIn connection request message to a user and changed your mind for some reason, there is a solution to go back. Click on “My Network” in your LinkedIn profile: My LinkedIn network Select “Manage”: Manage my network Then “Sent” and “Withdraw” next to the person’s name. Cancel your already sent invitations If you cancel a LinkedIn connection request message, you will not be able to send it again to the same person for the next three weeks. New send blocked for 3 weeks

The Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts When Sending LinkedIn Connection Request Messages

Following some common-sense rules when sending LinkedIn connection request messages not only improves your acceptance rates but also prevents you from being temporarily suspended on LinkedIn. Indeed, it only takes a few people refusing your connection request and clicking “I don’t know this person” to get flagged on LinkedIn. Therefore, here are the top 10 do’s and don’ts you should keep in mind when drafting the 300 characters of a LinkedIn invitation request message. On this subject, if you use Leadin for your contacts, the number of characters is limited to 250. This way, we ensure that once Leadin replaces placeholders with actual information, the total character count does not exceed 300.

Top 5 (Strategy) – Things to Do When Sending a LinkedIn Connection Request Message (to aim for up to +70% acceptance)

  1. Write a compelling text to grab their attention
  2. Personalize your LinkedIn connection request messages to clearly show why you want to connect with them specifically
  3. Add a hook or call to action so you can continue the conversation once accepted
  4. Be polite and professional
  5. Briefly introduce yourself if you have space to do so

Top 5 (Strategy) – Things NOT to Do When Sending a LinkedIn Connection Request Message (to avoid less than <30% acceptance)

  1. Do not send irrelevant connection requests (make sure you know who you are targeting)
  2. Do not send generic or empty connection requests (sometimes this increases your acceptance rate, but it decreases reply rate!)
  3. Avoid making personal references or giving compliments that are not related to professional activity or not justified
  4. Do not talk only about yourself and your experience
  5. Avoid selling right away

Even if you follow the rules and seemingly do everything right, LinkedIn can still limit your connection requests. We must accept this, and get used to it. It’s a strong reminder, for example, to always A/B test our LinkedIn campaigns to get better results! Because surely, you want to make the most of your LinkedIn prospecting… The solution lies in sending open LinkedIn InMails. An InMail is a direct private message to or from a LinkedIn member who is not directly connected with you. As simple as it may seem, many people struggle to understand what LinkedIn InMails are and how to use them effectively. And that’s a shame, because proper (and smart) use of InMails boosts your response rates and positively impacts your lead generation results! That’s exactly what LinkedIn had in mind when they created InMails, their own version of emails for 2nd and 3rd degree connections. And we’ve found the perfect way to automate this inside Leadin! Imagine not having to manually filter your eligible prospects anymore… You could choose to send a free InMail if possible, or a connection request if not. Free LinkedIn InMail Promise, it’s even simpler than it looks! Check out our article on smart sequences and the future of B2B engagement. In any case, today we’ll cover:
  • What a LinkedIn InMail is.
  • Why you should send LinkedIn InMails.
  • How to send a LinkedIn InMail.
  • How many InMail credits your LinkedIn subscription includes.
  • The best InMail templates for 8 LinkedIn prospecting scenarios and why they work.

What is a LinkedIn InMail?

As mentioned earlier, InMails are free or paid direct messages on LinkedIn that you can send to members outside your network, unlike regular LinkedIn messages. Just before we begin, discover how to generate up to 800 qualified leads per month automatically by clicking here Still unsure about InMails? Well… statistics show that you’re 3x more likely to get a reply from a 2nd or 3rd-degree connection using a LinkedIn InMail than with a typical cold email. However, it’s important to use your InMail credits wisely — not only because you have a limited number in your subscription (we’ll go into this later), but also because InMails should be reserved for people who receive many connection requests and are hard to reach. There are two types of InMails:

1. Free InMails

If you want to be able to receive free LinkedIn InMails, you need to configure your profile accordingly. Only LinkedIn Premium and Sales Navigator accounts can send and receive free InMails. Basic accounts can only receive paid InMails. The only way a basic LinkedIn user can contact others is through a message — meaning a connection is required. Follow the steps below to set up your LinkedIn account to receive free InMails. There are two ways: 1 – Go to your profile page and click the “Edit profile” icon. Edit LinkedIn profile Then click the “Premium” icon. Toggle on or off the “Open Profile” option. LinkedIn Open Profile 2 – Or go via the “Me” icon. Then click “Settings & Privacy”. LinkedIn settings and privacy On the left sidebar, click “Communications”, then “Who can reach you”. Choose “Messages” on the right side. LinkedIn Communications As you can see below, you can choose whether or not to receive paid and free InMails. Allow Paid InMails LinkedIn Premium and Sales Navigator users have access to 800 free LinkedIn InMails by default. When you upgrade from a basic account, these credits become available for better performance.

2. Paid InMails

If you are a Premium or Sales Navigator user, you can send paid InMails to any LinkedIn member. In short, any LinkedIn user can receive paid InMails, but only Premium and Sales Navigator users can send them. Each LinkedIn subscription includes a certain number of paid InMails (see details below), but only LinkedIn Premium members can purchase additional LinkedIn InMails. The cost of each extra InMail varies depending on your geographical location. The number of InMails you can purchase outside of your plan is also limited. On the other hand, Sales Navigator users cannot buy extra InMails outside of what’s included in the plan. More on that below.

LinkedIn InMail limit: how many credits per subscription?

Here’s how to check how many paid InMails you have left. Select “Access My Premium“. Access my premium account on LinkedIn On the right-hand side, you’ll find all the details about your InMail credits. Manage LinkedIn subscription Note: there is no way to know the status of your free LinkedIn InMails. In practice: every time a LinkedIn member replies to your InMail, you get that credit back. So, if you target your audience well and write engaging messages, you can technically send more than your subscription allows per month. These rules apply to all other LinkedIn premium versions. The only difference between subscriptions is the number of monthly paid InMail credits:
LinkedIn Subscription Monthly InMail Credits Max InMail Credits
LinkedIn Premium Career 5 15
LinkedIn Premium Business 15 45
Sales Navigator 20 60
Sales Navigator Teams 30 90
Sales Navigator Enterprise 50 150
Recruiter Lite 30 90
Recruiter Professional 100 300
Recruiter Corporate 150 450

Buying LinkedIn InMails

Only LinkedIn Premium users can purchase additional InMails. If you have Sales Navigator or Recruiter, your available InMails are limited to what your LinkedIn plan provides. If you have LinkedIn Premium and want to purchase more InMails, here’s how: 1. Click on “Access My Premium“. Access My Premium on LinkedIn 2. On the right, you’ll see an overview of your remaining credits, along with the “Buy More” button. Prices vary by region, but it can be up to €10 (!!) per InMail. Buy more LinkedIn InMail credits

Why send InMails on LinkedIn?

InMails appear like regular LinkedIn messages in your prospect’s inbox without being connected to them. That means you don’t have to wait for your connection request to be accepted. For example, your 2nd-degree connections are great for expanding your network, so it’s a good idea to reach out with a connection request first. However, your 3rd-degree connections require more care. As mentioned, they’re more likely to reject your connection request. That’s why you should research, get creative, and ideally use LinkedIn InMail to reach out. Since you only have a limited number of InMail credits per month, LinkedIn forces you to be selective. For instance, having a system where you recover InMail credits when someone replies is another way LinkedIn encourages users to write compelling messages and reach out with purpose. This helps LinkedIn prevent spam and maintain the networking quality of its platform.

How to send an InMail on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn InMail features are similar to a standard email. You should treat them as such in terms of subject line and preview text. Here are the character limits:
  • Subject line: 200 characters
  • Message body: 1900 characters
  • Signature: 150 characters
There are two ways to send a LinkedIn InMail: 1. Go to the LinkedIn profile of the member you want to message via InMail. Click “Message“. InMail Message Since you’re not connected, LinkedIn automatically redirects you to send an InMail. Send InMail on LinkedIn 2. You can also do this from your LinkedIn inbox. Click on “Messaging“. LinkedIn Messaging Then click “Create new message”. New LinkedIn InMail message Type the name of your prospect. You’ll get a dropdown menu. If you select someone you’re not connected with, LinkedIn will redirect you to send them an InMail.

They will therefore be more likely to accept your request and connect with you. It is more important than ever to have high quality connection request. And this type of engagement is one of our favorite campaigns to connect with new people. With this campaign, we often get a 70 %. at 80 %. For more information on how to set up similar outreach campaigns and the exact outreach models we use, you’ll soon be able to check out our in-depth guide to engaging posts / posts on LinkedIn.

2. Scraping and engaging participants in LinkedIn surveys.

Retrieving lists of participants from LinkedIn surveys is a new tactic that we have experimented with successfully. As with the post-engagement strategy above, the reason this prospecting campaign works well is that you can use the survey to easily start a conversation. And because it’s easier to take a survey than it is to leave a comment on LinkedIn, you’ll often have more people to reach that way. People can also vote on your polls without being connected with you. So this is a great way to attract new prospects who will be happy to get in touch with you. If they’ve taken your survey, there’s a good chance they’re happy to connect with you as well! However, you must be the survey creator , otherwise you will not be able to retrieve the list of prospects who responded. To retrieve your survey listings on LinkedIn: 1. Copy the link to the post / poll. Copy link to post & survey 2. Create a new campaign on Leadin. 3. Choose Post Engagement and paste the URL. Scrap linkedin url 4. Build your streak and write your engagement messages however you see fit.

Connection message via intelligent sequence

3. Scraping and engaging participants in LinkedIn events.

Extracting LinkedIn events is one way efficient and specific to find your target audience on LinkedIn, regardless of the niche. It only takes just under 5 minutes to retrieve events and reach up to 1,000 prospects. Without the need for complicated LinkedIn filters, retargeting or other “hacks”. Here’s how this simple approach strategy works: 1. Find a relevant event on LinkedIn that your target audience will attend. Event filter 2. Press “Attend” to access the list of other people who are also planning to attend. LinkedIn events 3. Refine the list of participants using the LinkedIn search criteria Rentals filter 4. Go to Leadin and import the URL of your search to then create your campaign and automatically engage the selected participants. Copy linkedin link with the degrees of connections
  1. When creating your message sequence, you can approach your approach in two different ways:
  • If you are the event organizer, you can retrieve the list of attendees, thank them for attending and get in touch with them to further develop this relationship.
  • If you are attending the same event as your prospects, mention that you are eager to attend (or what you enjoyed about it if the event has passed) and ask a personalized question related to the event.
As, in both cases, you have something in common with your prospect, most people will be happy to get in touch with you.

4. LinkedIn targeting and the creation of customer personas

As you may have noticed, LinkedIn targeting has changed dramatically due to the new limit of 100 connections per week . The “broadcast & pray” tactic is over. And every connection matters more than ever. While a lot of things are still under development, here’s what we know: The more your acceptance rate connections and your response rate are high, the more likely you are to exceed the limit of 100 connections per week. Essentially, LinkedIn wants platform users to connect with people they know. personally. Therefore, you must really reconsider your approach as part of obtaining a connection acceptance rate as high as possible . In our experience, the 3 strategies that make it possible to obtain the highest acceptance rates are the following :
  1. Engagement in LinkedIn posts and publications.
  2. Scraping and engagement of participants in LinkedIn surveys.
  3. Scraping and engagement of participants in LinkedIn events.
And these strategies are the most effective among this set of targeting strategies with which we are regularly successful: While LinkedIn does not yet provide real visibility into what exactly triggers these limits (profile views; connection requests; other), we have found that the new connection request limit is a good thing . It was necessary because people were abusing LinkedIn with prospecting strategies such as “ quantity at the expense of quality Simply because they could target more people than they do now. Today, the best performing campaigns receive fewer connection limits . In other words, the more qualified your prospects, the less risk you run! And LinkedIn outreach campaigns of more qualified contacts had no issues with LinkedIn’s new limit. Lesson ? Higher qualification of leads equals higher conversions to booked calls. Calls reserved on calendar So, to move forward with your prospecting campaigns on LinkedIn, you need to focus on your targeting in order to reach relevant prospects, and on the quality from prospects if you want to avoid the new connection limit on LinkedIn. Now here are 5 targeting tips for increase your acceptance rate and improve your targeting .

5. 5 LinkedIn Targeting Tips You Can Use To Increase Your Reach Today

Tip # 1: Create profiles of your ideal clients for LinkedIn and start using search groups.

The increase in acceptance rate of your connection requests is an important step in overcoming the limit of 100 connections per week . If LinkedIn sees that many people are connecting with you and responding to your posts, it will assume that you are connecting with people you know. personally and that you don’t spam random people. So, when doing prospecting, you should first identify the different types of people involved in your sales process :
  1. Decision Makers – Level 1 prospects at the top of the chain. Usually these are CEOs, communications directors, VPs of marketing, etc.
  2. Influencers – Level 2 prospects who are typically involved in the decision-making process and guide day-to-day activities. For example, the growth manager, sales manager, senior managers, etc.
  3. Advocates – Level 3 prospects who have a voice but no purchasing power. These are account managers, account managers, marketing managers, etc.
After you have gathered your targeting URLs corresponding to the segments above (we recommend Sales Navigator to do this) it will be relevant to duplicate your sequences and adapt the speech according to the degree of seniority and involvement of your targets. And the higher your qualification rate, the higher the conversion rate in calls generated will be!

Tip # 2: Locate businesses that match your targeting criteria.

This trick is simple but effective. Essentially, the people you are targeting should align with your targeting criteria and your Ideal Customer Persona (KPI). Think about your intention indicator . For example, here is a list of software companies in the United States and Europe, taken from Crunchbase (you can take advantage of a free account on their platform to build your first lists and extract your first data). Crunchbase company list Some intention indicators may include: The crossing a new stage , the job changes , the recent hires , the high ad spending , the Frequent posting of blog articles , etc. For example, if a business quickly hires more employees, we can assume that it is growing or has secured a new round of funding. In other words, she has more money to spend, and your offer might be relevant at the time. Once you have more intention indicators , you can think of other targeting strategies based on your offer. Ideally, you should also use the customization when logging in here too. Whatever your data source ( Crunchbase in this case) all you need to do is import your CSV targeting documents into Leadin to engage the targets: Import a csv file

Tip # 3: Use Booleans to Filter Your Business List.

With this targeting hack, you can use Boolean filters next to your targeting sheet and then paste them into Sales Navigator. LinkedIn Boolean searches include:
  • Quotation marks – For an exact match of the expression, enclose your query in quotes.
  • NOT searches – To exclude a phrase from your search results.
  • Gold searches – To display results that include one or more items from a list.
  • AND searches – To display the results which include all the elements of a list.
Then you can paste these Boolean filters into the company section of Sales Navigator to ensure a more specific search, like this: Tips sales navigators filters And this brings us to our next targeting hack.

Tip #4: Use Keywords and Seniority Levels to Improve Targeting in Sales Navigator.

This targeting hack uses a mix exclusions and of securities to target the right people. It’s best to use an in-action example to show how detailed Sales Navigator filtering can be:
  • Geography : Europe, United States.
  • Relationship : 2nd and 3rd degree connections.
  • Business : Use the boolean filters from hack n ° 3.
  • Workforce of the company : 1-10, 11-50, 51-200
  • Seniority level : CXO, Director, Manager, Owner, VP, Partner.
  • Function : Business Development
  • Title : CEO, Co-Founder
  • Excluded : Board of Directors, CTO, Finance, Growth, Marketing, Operations, Partner, Product
Filter via sales navigator

Tip # 5: Clean up your list to make sure it’s campaign ready (“prequalify”)

The final stage of prospecting is to prequalify your contacts in order to target only relevant prospects. Sometimes, LinkedIn lets prospects pass that don’t match your filters. To make sure your prospecting campaign is ready, here’s what you can do: In your CSV / Google Sheets file, you can re-filter negative keywords (eg ‘Social’ for social media marketing) in the job title row and remove those that are not relevant to your campaign. Cleaning csv file As a final check, you should Again browse your contact list manually and see if they match your targeting criteria . It might take a while, but it’s worth it as you will get a higher acceptance and response rate. You can also use the dynamic personalization in your smart sequences for further. Bonus Tip # 6: Create and use your qualifying or disqualifying tags in Leadin to qualify leads upon receipt of a response. Finally, you can add personalized labels / tags in Leadin: for example according to the degree of qualification and engagement of your prospects (from the lowest potential to the highest potential). Prospect heat filter The idea is that once you get a response from your prospects, you can browse their profile, see if they match your targeting criteria, and apply the custom label accordingly. It is also ideal for following and relaunching your prospects from time to time by filtering on these same labels! Gone are the days when you had to manually write down your follow-up and follow-up actions. Prospects filter attribution This way, you don’t spam prospects who are not in your target market. Once again, it should be noted that you need to target your ideal clients or people who match your research groups (see tip # 1). And by qualifying or disqualifying prospects in this way, you can only move your campaigns forward with relevant leads. In general, this is a good sales and prospecting practice, which also allows you to get the most out of the changes to LinkedIn.

Have you ever received a message like this from someone selling you something on LinkedIn?

” Hello[PRÉNOM] . I saw you working at[NOM DE L’ENTREPRISE] . I love[NOM DE L’ENTREPRISE] and what you do! Let’s connect so I can tell you more about what I do. Looking forward to discussing. Blablabla … ”

Or in the bad examples automated messages on LinkedIn:

Wrong LinkedIn approach message

If you want to have real results, above spam you must improve your LinkedIn posts .

People are tired of receiving the same messages!

We understand it and so do you: LinkedIn is filled with sales opportunities.

It’s much easier to reach a decision maker through LinkedIn messaging than on any other platform.

But we also see spam and poor quality messages .

And nobody likes it … in particular those who manage their LinkedIn inbox properly .

In this sense, we are going to share with you our growth hack on LinkedIn which consists of retargeting content in the LinkedIn news feed and how to use it to obtain very high engagement results.

Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? 😉

Let’s see the steps we are going to take to achieve this:

  1. Find an influencer in your market or posts engaged with LinkedIn search and keywords.
  2. Find a post with an engagement rate meaningful that relates to your “offer” so you know the audience will be relevant to your message.
  3. Scrape everyone who liked and commented on the post of the influencer with Leadin (the safest and most advanced LinkedIn lead generation and automation tool – works 24/7 in the cloud, let us know if you have any questions about the tool! 😉).
  4. Configure the campaign in Leadin and write the sequence of “automated” messages.

1. Find an influencer in your market or posts engaged with LinkedIn search and keywords

To be sure you generate great leads on LinkedIn, you need to have a specific target audience and know where they are.

Of course, every growth marketer / hacker wants to have a KPI that is as specific as possible! If possible up to their interests and motivations.

Once you have an idea of your customer personas and you know which LinkedIn influencers they follow, or what type of content they like, then we can take the next step.

Have no idea which influencers your target market is following? Check out this post on Salesdorado on some of the best LinkedIn marketing influencers to follow in 2022 to get started.

2. The message (s) with a high engagement rate to generate leads

By browsing the profile of a LinkedIn influencer or by searching directly for the “post” section, you will find that there are a lot of posts with high added value and high engagement rates.

For example, you would like to choose the publications below:

High LinkedIn post engagement rate

3. Retrieve all those who liked and commented on their posts with Leadin to generate leads

3.1 Go to the message and copy the url of the message .

Copy the post link to Leadin

3.2. Log in to your account Leadin .

3.3 Click on “ Create New Campaign “.

4. Configure the campaign in Leadin and write the sequence of “automated” messages

When writing the sequence of automated posts, it is important that you write in a way that your target audience will relate to.

The “ problem Of automation and lead generation on LinkedIn is that it no longer feels authentic.

It is therefore important that you give the impression of being natural and personal.

Try to find something that you have in common, and preferably, something that is not too generic.

Here’s what we’ve done to create great engagement posts for our target audience:

4.1 Create content for this post-engagement campaign

In our case, we know that our target audience liked or commented on articles related to social selling and increasing productivity on LinkedIn.

It’s a great start to a conversation!

If we approach this topic in a natural way, the prospect will be more inclined to accept our connection request.

A message of this type can then be very effective:

“Hello {first name},

I saw that you also liked the publication of {Author’s name} and I guess we have common interests in growth, social selling and automation.

Looking forward to sharing my network with you,

Pierre “

To the prospect, it doesn’t seem automated, because it is an authentic approach!

After reviewing the results, we realized that more than 70% people have accepted our connection invitation and that 40% responded to our follow-ups / reminders.

If you don’t know the average numbers on LinkedIn, these are great engagement numbers!

Once our target accepts our login request, we continue to value and share step-by-step growth tips that we wrote (you can find here the item we sent).

From there, we’re offering a free trial, and we’re running a Facebook retargeting campaign for our solution (another topic for another time!).

4.2 Configure advanced campaign targeting options

After clicking on “ Next “; we arrive on the “ Campaign options “.

We find at this stage several advanced options such as:

  1. Target the premium accounts only
  2. Open the discovery of free InMails
  3. Include people with whom you have already interacted
  4. Collect contact information

Note that we do not activate any of the above options, because we will add in our campaign the step “ Profile view »Which will take care of scraping by passing the contact information!

Scrap profile view

To go further in the analytical monitoring of our campaigns, we recommend that you click on “ Advanced »Where you will find additional options such as:

  1. Only the unique leads that are not present in any other campaign
  2. Only the leads that are not already pending connection requests
  3. Enable link click tracking (in emails)
  4. Enable email opening tracking

advanced settings

Here, are selected by default the first two advanced options , and we will recommend adding the following two ; see schedule a specific date / time for the start of your post engagement campaign!

4.3 Build the sequence and write the engagement messages

After clicking on “ next », It’s time to build your sequence via the smart sequence builder. To do this, connect the step ” Lead Source ” (here being the list of prospects imported by Leadin from the URL of the publication you scraped, see earlier in this guide) at all stages of your sequence, simply by selecting items on the right and by connecting them together !

Creation of engagement sequence

Need help writing your LinkedIn News Feed post engagement sequence? No problem: you can find the models that we have used in this guide at next link , or directly from extract of the sequence this – underneath .

Do not hesitate to copy / paste them and fill in the variables between brackets to write your own sequence!

Here is ours:

Example engagement sequence

On the left side of the sequence:

Message # 1 – Free InMail:

Hello {{firstName} }, I could see that you had reacted to the message from {{AuthorName}} on {{SujetDuPost} }.

As I also noticed from looking at your profile that you are familiar with {{Sujet} }, I wanted to know how you approach the {{Key issue you solve}} in {{CurrentCompany} }?

Looking forward to telling you more about it if you are open to it.

Signature

{{VotreNom} }

{{VotrePoste} }. @ {{Your society}}

Message # 2 – Email (email was only sent to work email addresses verified by Leadin):

Subject: LinkedIn Suite

Hello {{firstName} }, I tried to reach you on LinkedIn a few days ago, but since I didn’t get a response from you, I decided to give it a try here as well.

Seeing that you have reacted to {{AuthorName}} ‘s article on {{SujetDuPost} }. I wanted to show you how we helped solve {{the key problem you are solving}} for {{affected business / case study}}.

Do you have a few minutes this week or the next to discuss it?

Yours,

Signature

On the right side of the sequence:

Connection invitation (the message sent with the connection request is the message seen earlier in this guide, as well as more generally we recommend the variant below at this stage):

” Hello {{FirstName} },

I saw that you also liked the publication of {Author’s name} and I guess we have common interests in growth, social selling and automation.

Looking forward to sharing my network with you,

Pierre “

Or more generally the variant:

” Hello {{FirstName} }, I wanted to thank you because I noticed that you reacted to the post from {Author’s name} on {{sujet} }.

Looking forward to being part of your network and following your news.

Signature “

Message # 1 – Thank you and “soft” pitch message with the sending of the piece of content (seen in point 4.1 above) :

” Hello {{firstName} }, and thanks for adding! 🤜🤛

The reason I wanted to be part of your network as well is to see how you approach {{Key issue you are solving}} in {{CurrentCompany} }.

Do you do it through {{option1} }, ou { {option2}}?

By the way, I wanted to share with you the guide I recently wrote on the {{sujet} }. Here is the link {{article link}}. Tell me what you think ? “

Message # 2 – Immediate follow-up after sending the piece of content :

” Hello {{firstName} }, quickly and hoping that the guide I sent you will be of great value to you … just wanted to know what you thought of {{Key issue you are solving}}?

To read you,

{{Your first name}} “

Message # 3 – Email (only on the business addresses of prospects):

Subject: Quick question {{FirstName} } (linkedin suite)

” Hello {{firstName} },

I tried reaching you through LinkedIn, but I’m assuming you’re inundated with connection requests as well?

The reason I wanted to contact you is because I noticed that you reacted to {{AuthorName} }’s article on {{SujetDuPost} }.

We were able to help {{Affected Company / Case Study}} solve {{The key problem you are solving}} so I was wondering how you approach the issue in {{CurrentCompany} }?

How about discussing it quickly this week or the next?

PS: I take the liberty of sending you the link to the guide (“growth hack”!) That I recently wrote on the subject, I hope to have your expert feedback! Here is the link: {{article link}}

Yours,

Signature ”

It is on the basis of this exact same sequence model that we obtained very high engagement statistics: more than 70% acceptance , 35% follow-up and over 80% openness to our emails (!!).

Engagement campaign results

So what are you waiting for to get started with your LinkedIn Feed Post engagement campaigns? Easy, right? 😉

By the way, this simple tactic is very effective if LinkedIn limits your connections to 100 per week : with very high engagement statistics, you will generate as many – if not more – leads for your business than with more traditional techniques (ex: a simple seller login message that does not work!)

advice : this technique is all the more effective if you use the “If free InMail” feature to detect whether your targets are able to receive free inmail from you – a way to bypass the connection request limit because you won’t have to send a connection request to generate leads!

With this technique, you’ll reach out to prospects with whom you often have something in common (e.g., you liked the same article). They will therefore be more likely to accept your request and connect with you.

It is more important than ever to have high connection demand. And this type of engagement is one of our favorite campaigns to connect with new people.

With this type of campaign, we often get a 70% to 80% average connection acceptance rate .

It’s your turn to build and launch your campaign, then make yourself comfortable and watch the prospects arrive after reading the article you have shared with them. 😎

Here’s why the above approach works so well:

  1. By liking or commenting on a post, we can assume that the person is actively using LinkedIn.
  2. Due to the post’s specific engagement, we may also collect its interests (e.g. related to LinkedIn / Social selling / Growth hacking).
  3. By bringing up the post she liked, we are not intrusive and we have something in common that we can talk about, without being too random or spammy.

4.4 Why Leadin is the best (and the unique one so advanced!) marketplace LinkedIn and Email multichannel automation tool

Of course, you can always approach all of your prospects manually with a fully personalized message every time.

But it takes TOO MUCH of time , and it’s incredibly boring to perform .

So why do this when you can use multichannel automation instead?

Using Leadin is a snap and targeting leads has never been easier.

To compare, we’ve done our research and tried every other LinkedIn lead generation and automation tool on the market.

We have for example tried LinkedIn Helper or Dux-Soup (some of the best brands on the market).

But since these two tools are browser extensions r, we still had the same problems.

  • There is always the risk of being banned by LinkedIn (which has already happened due to the stealthy LinkedIn update).
  • The extension turns off when you turn off your PC (because it is a browser extension).
  • Follow up on my leads using LinkedIn chat (which involved opening a separate tab and logging into LinkedIn each time – so impractical ! )

And that’s where Leadin join the game.

This tool works 24/24 and 7/7 on the cloud, cannot be detected by LinkedIn and has a ton of unique features by making the most advanced tool on the market (and by far, we can prove it to you!).

Here’s why Leadin stands out from its competitors:

Security

Safety should always be the first concern when using a LinkedIn lead generation and automation tool.

With Leadin, each user has their own unique, dedicated and local IP address.

Therefore, it is undetectable by LinkedIn .

It is enormous !

If you are using a LinkedIn browser extension, there is always a chance that it will be detected.

Our algorithm is also designed to mimic human behavior(you configure yourself in the “ Settings ” your daily activity limits , and one warming up over 2 weeks is automatically applied when you connect your account, to guarantee its safety, as well as health of your domain name !)

Sequence results

There is therefore no suspicious activity that would indicate to LinkedIn that these actions are not performed by a human.

Ban LinkedIn

LinkedIn use message

Leadin works online (cloud based!)

This means that it works 24/7 on your PC (or at specific times you can adjust it in settings).

When you use a Chrome extension, it turns off after you close your laptop because the tool is browser based.

This is not the case with Leadin (even for sending emails!).

Don’t want to contact people on the weekends?

Activate Leadin Weekend

No problem !

You can also configure the tool to start operating at 9 a.m., when most people are heading to work.

Leadin activation schedule

With Leadin, your campaign takes place whenever you want.

You can set up multiple campaigns at the same time and customize each follow-up accordingly.

If you have any questions, you can always consult the help Center where the blog where we regularly post tips on how to use Leadin and start generating more leads.

And if you have any further questions, you can always contact our customer support team, or me personally!

Customization

So that your messages are stand out even more, Leadin has built a integration unpublished allowing you, in addition to the message, to customize your images and GIFs .

Leadin can help you place your dynamic images directly in the inboxes of your prospects on LinkedIn or Email , thus allowing you to obtain even better results s when it comes to lead generation.

Advanced multichannel

So you no longer have to juggle between LinkedIn and your e-mail box, or even “tap” together multiple tools to have a 360 ° reach of your prospecting … Leadin allows you to add steps like email to your footage.

And that’s not all ! We have our own technology to find the professional emails of your prospects , from a simple LinkedIn search, as well as check these emails in real time .

The ideal option: you can go as far as choosing what type of email you want your prospects to receive your messages on. What more can be said…

Business email

Main points to remember

If done right, LinkedIn and multichannel email automation can be of great value and allow you to generate leads while you sleep.

To sum up, here’s how you can increase your acceptance rate and lead generation efforts on LinkedIn to a level never seen before:

  1. Find the right post with strong engagement from your target market.
  2. Retrieve the list of profiles who liked or commented on the post using Leadin .
  3. Set up the campaign and get ready to reach your ideal target market.
  4. Write messages that your target market will appreciate and resonate with. The more natural you are, the better!

And There you go !

The reason this campaign worked so well is that people are more likely to connect with strangers they have with them. something in common . As a reminder, this is a LinkedIn event that you are planning both to attend! So if you mention the name of the event in your connection request (as we did below), or if you are using some other form of customization , you can expect to get a higher acceptance rate . Below, we started a prospect matchmaking campaign before the event even took place, and then continued after. But you can also conjure up a specific element of the event (after it happened) that you liked. In return, you can ask your prospects what they appreciated the most about the event. In short, it is about establishing a relationship and use the customization . Your prospects will be more inclined to to respond . Here is the flow of prospecting that we used and the exact models: Step n ° 3 : Once your list of event attendees has been narrowly filtered, it is time for you to copy and paste the URL of this filtered list into Leadin to create your campaign. Step 3: Copy and paste Leadin Enter the name of the campaign (for example: the name of the event in this case – “ Microsoft OneNote “). Copy – Paste the URL where it says “ LinkedIn URL “. Leadin will automatically recognize the types of connections you are targeting (e.g .: 2 th and 3 th degree). Step n ° 4 : Create your campaign and customize your login invitation by referencing the specific LinkedIn event. The fact that you are attending or have attended the same event is a very valuable reference when you personalize your connection request or a regular LinkedIn message. Your approach will not seem random and therefore your acceptance rate will immediately increase! Now here is how the campaign unfolds and the models that we used to achieve the connection rates mentioned above. You can start with something like this (login message translated from the original for this international target): ” Hello {{firstName} }, I noticed that you are also participating in the Microsoft OneNote event held on LinkedIn.
